Basin Electric Power Cooperative, one of the country's largest generation and transmission cooperatives, partnered with Paulsen to better understand the challenges and opportunities ahead. Through in-depth research, leadership perspectives were aligned, key priorities were identified, and a path forward was developed to help Basin and its Class A cooperatives plan for the future.

Listening to Cooperative Leadership

Paulsen conducted one-on-one interviews with Basin’s executive team, board of directors, and senior staff, alongside 27 interactive feedback sessions with Class A general managers, board members, and Management Advisory Committee (MAC) participants. Responses were anonymous, allowing for open and candid discussions about Basin’s role, priorities, and future direction.

Key Insights and Priorities

The research confirmed Basin’s commitment to affordable rates and reliable power while identifying challenges such as regulatory changes, shifting energy markets, and long-term planning needs. Most of all, this research affirmed Basin Electric's commitment to strengthening the cooperative model.

A Plan for the Future

The outcome of this process was a prioritized roadmap that helped Basin focus its time, energy, and resources on the most pressing issues. Leadership now has a clear direction for addressing challenges like workforce development, evolving member expectations, and the future of power generation. By fostering open dialogue and listening to its membership, Basin is better equipped to navigate change and continue serving its cooperative family.
